Spine Q & A

What is spinal pain?

Almost everyone experiences pain in their spine, or back, at some point. Most of the time, spinal pain is short-lived (acute). In some cases, spinal pain can last for several months or years.

If you continue to suffer from spinal pain after multiple attempts at treatment, the team at OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine can help. They use advanced interventional pain management techniques to relieve all types of back pain, including pain that radiates from your spine to your arms or legs.

What causes pain in your spine?

Most acute back pain results from a muscle strain or ligament sprain. This often happens when you twist your spine or lift something too heavy.

Other common causes of spinal pain include:

  • Herniated or ruptured discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Sciatica

If a spinal disc herniates or ruptures, it may bulge out and press on a nearby nerve. When a nerve is compressed, or pinched, it’s called radiculopathy. In addition to causing pain in the spine, radiculopathy can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.

How is spinal pain diagnosed?

First, the team at OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine carefully evaluates your condition and examines your spine. Depending on your specific symptoms, they may perform one or more diagnostic procedures, such as:

  • Facet joint injection
  • Nerve block injection
  • Epidural injection

These injections block pain signal communication in different parts of your spine. If the injection relieves your pain, your OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine provider knows which nerve is causing the problem.

How is spinal pain treated?

After they diagnose your condition, the team at OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine develops an individualized treatment plan. They may administer another nerve block with a therapeutic dose of medication, or they may recommend another treatment, such as:

Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine involves using your body’s natural healing properties to repair damaged tissue and enhance recovery. The team at OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine may use stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or both to treat your spine.

The Biodisc® procedure

The team at OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine invented and developed the Biodisc® procedure, a stem cell injection that relieves pain from a damaged or degenerated spinal disc.

Spinal cord stimulation

A spinal cord stimulator is a surgically implanted device that allows you to send electrical impulses to your spine with a remote control. The electrical stimulation reduces or eliminates pain.

Minimally invasive spine surgery

The team at OMNI Pain & Precision Medicine strives to help patients avoid surgery as much as possible. When spine surgery is necessary, they use innovative and minimally invasive techniques.
