Diagnostic Testing

Independent Medical Exams

This is a physical exam that can be performed by doctors, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, or any licensed health care provider. Usually, the examination is the first meeting between the patient and examiner, indicating that there is no history or past relationship between the patient and the examiner. This creates an unbiased examination. The unique aspect of this exam is that there is usually a legal agenda. The examination is used to further determine certain factors related to patient’s illness or injury. The goal is for the examiner to objectively examine the patient and determine the diagnosis, short-term and long-term care that is needed, any resulting disabilities, and whether patient can return to work and daily life activities, etc. The examinations are typically used in Worker’s Compensation claims.
