Types of Pain and Problems

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome in which patients have chronic, widespread pain and tender points in soft tissues and muscles. This pain may be found anywhere and in multiple locations. Some patients experience other symptoms like fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, numbness, depression, anxiety, difficulty with memory, and stiffness. Not all patients with fibromyalgia have the same symptoms or same degree of pain and tender points. Any laboratory tests performed are done for the provider to rule out other causes of pain. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia is based on trigger points and exclusion of other diseases. There are various treatment options that include: physical therapy, TENS unit, heat/cold therapy, massage, exercise, diet changes, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, Botox injections, medications like anti-depressants and NSAIDs, and opioids. The most common treatment is trigger point injections using Lidocaine or dry-needling of trigger points.
